"The Appalachian Staple Foods Collaborative and Shagbark Seed & Mill Co. has been working with area educators from schools and the Health Department to contribute grain lessions and demonstrations to the efforts of Live Healthy Appalachia for the last month. That work will culminate this Saturday at the Live Healthy Appalachia Conference at the Athens Community Center in Athens on East State Street, just down the road from the largest open air farmers market in Ohio. Come on down! Shagbark Seed & Mill Co. will join many other community members at the conference to show just how delicious healthy food can be!"
Atlanta Business RadioX: A Community Cares through Live Health Appalachia! (audio interview)--May 18, 2011
Southeastern Ohio has some of the highest rates of chronic diseases in the country. In forming the “Live Healthy Appalachia” initiative (LHA – www.livehealthyappalachia.org ), community leaders in and around the city of Athens, OH are committed to begin an assault on the deadly conditions of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. LHA is a partnership which includes Ohio University, the City of Athens, Athens County Department of Public Health, and Athens City & County schools.
Louise Koons DiLullo, LHA Initiative Coordinator, and Tom Kostohryz, founder of LHA, joined the show to share their program’s vision and purpose. We discussed some of the key programs and events that are planned; and we learned their expectations on what will make LHA a successful and sustainable initiative.

"Consider attending a 3-day low-cost wellness weekend event in beautiful Athens, Ohio on May 19-21, that's open to the public, and co-sponsored by Ohio University Colleges of Health Professions & the Ohio University College of Osteopathics Medicine. Click here for more information.
It's an opportunity to see & hear many of the pioneers who are responsible for newest trend in "low-tech" "low-cost" disease reversal through plant-based nutrition: Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Jeff Novick, MS,RD, Dr. Hans Diehl, Rip Esselstyn, and many others."
